How to Use Antique Handkerchiefs
Like many of you, I really enjoy vintage things – quilts, glassware, linens, etc. I am always looking for ways to put them on display rather than hiding them away in a box. The memories that these items hold are very precious and meant to be shared. Sharing my love of these treasured family items and the memories they hold is one of my favorite things to do. After giving my “Mother’s Memories” presentation at a quilt guild recently, I received numerous questions about how to use old handkerchiefs in quilts.
It is rare to find antique handkerchiefs in pristine condition. Even if there are no holes or stains, they are usually worn thread bare as in the example pictured above. But they can still be incorporated into a quilt top that displays their beauty while helping preserve their integrity.
So here’s a great way to incorporate them into a quilt
Step one:
Wash each handkerchief by hand in a mild soap. Next, lay them out flat to dry. Gently press them with low heat/steam.
Step two:
Hand appliqué each handkerchief to a plain background square.
Step three:
Set the handkerchiefs together with sashing and add a border (shown here in blue). Hand or machine quilting on the handkerchiefs will help stabilize them.
Step four:
Quilt as desired. I used feathers in the blocks, sashing, and borders.
